Victor L. Roberts, MD, is the president and chief executive officer of Endocrine Associates of Florida in Lake Mary. During his career in endocrinology, Victor L. Roberts, MD, has become an advocate for continuous glucose monitoring.
Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is a process or technology that allows an individual to consistently and automatically track glucose levels in the blood, more commonly referred to as their blood sugar level. CGM is particularly beneficial for individuals living with diabetes on multidose insulin therapy or an insulin pump, as it provides real-time blood sugar information at a glance. In addition to checking a person’s glucose levels at any given time, individuals and medical professionals can use CGM to analyze levels over a longer period of time, identifying trends and patterns. This allows a person to make more informed decisions about their diet, exercise and medication. It can also help evaluate the effectiveness or any unforeseen complications of a new medication. Most CGM devices function as small sensors placed just below the skin, on the abdomen or arm. Individuals who believe they could benefit from CGM technology should speak with their physicians.
